Marist Europe

Meetings of two European Teams: Vocations and Mission

Two commissions within the European Marist Conference (CEM), the European Team for the Pastoral Care of Young People and Vocations and the European Mission Team each had a meeting at the end of October.

The Vocations Team met in the Marist College at Carcavelos near Lisbon, Portugal. Brother Roberto Di Troia, the representative of our Province on this team, reports:

“We were able to evaluate what was being done at this level in the European Provinces. And, looking to the future, we identified some notable events which will be available to young people: a training programme for youth activity leaders involved in Marist movements, the days in Lyon prior to the World Youth Day in Poland for young people from Provinces all over the world from the four branches of the Marist Family, a meeting of the youth of Europe in L’Hermitage in 2017 and the Easter Vocation Event for young people, reflecting on their future participation in the Marist life.

We were also able to visit a Marist project dealing with children in difficult situations, and spend an evening with university students who were Marist activity leaders in the Lisbon region.”

The Mission Team met in Athens to discuss the possibility of establishing a network of Marist schools in Europe. The encounter took place within the meeting of the CEM itself, held from October 25 – 29 also in Athens. All of the Provincials from Europe, including the newly appointed ones, and another representative from each Province participated.

Eight countries within the area have Marist schools – Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Hungary, Greece and Lebanon.

“The idea of creating a network of Marist educational works in Europe was welcomed very well by the members of the meeting,” said Brother João Carlos do Prado, director of the Mission Secretariat. “It is important in order to guarantee the future of the Marist mission in Europe,” he told the General House press office on October 29.

The next steps will be to establish the type of network, how it will be organised and implemented, as well as its contents, by the next meeting of the CEM, which will take place in May, 2016, in Lisbon, Portugal.

The Mission Team will meet again in Spain on December 18 in Alcalá de Henares and on February 9 – 10 in Guardamar.
