Mission and communication
The mission periodical “Kontinente” celebrates its golden jubilee
At a grand ceremony in Cologne on 20th January 2016 the 50th anniversary of the Catholic missionary magazine Kontinente was celebrated in the presence of the Papal Nuncio to Germany and the Archbishop of Accra, Ghana.
Two Marist Brothers, Alois Engel and Augustin Hendlmeier were present. They are the producers for the Marist Brothers and as such provide the pages in the periodical dealing with the news and articles about the Brothers from around the world. Together with the Marist Fathers they are responsible for the total Marist section of the periodical.
Since its foundation in 1966 as a communal undertaking by a host of orders and congregations, all of whom are active in the mission to the world, the 300 issues so far produced have all included news and reports of the Brothers’ communities and schools as well as news from around the Marist world, particularly the so-called “foreign missions”. This means that since the foundation in Kenya, that particular project of the German Province has always had a significant share of the Kontinente reports.
In the production of the periodical there are today 24 Institutes with their particular insert. The total circulation is 187,600 due particularly to the participation of “Missio”. The circulation of the Marist Brothers’ insert is about 1500 copies. The periodical is of a high professional standard and measures up well against other widespread German periodicals such as “Stadt Gottes” published by the Steyler Fathers and “Weltmission”.
